The Reviews widget allows you to do your Reviews. It shows you a count of how many items are in your Reviews pile, and has a single button that you click to do your Reviews.

Priority Reviews

You can customize your Reviews widget to display the number of “priority” Reviews.

When turned on, you will see two counts in the widget. The first count represents the total number of items in your Reviews pile, and the second represents the total number of all Apprentice stage items available in your Reviews pile. For those of us with limited time, who need to carve out time in a day to get our Review piles done, this feature should be helpful as it will better allow you to choose how to spend the time that you do have.

If you have the time to regularly do your Reviews (i.e. a few times a day) then you probably don’t need to turn this on.

Reviews Completed

The Reviews Completed widget displays how many reviews you have done in a given period as well as the previous period.

You can only choose one period to view per widget. To view multiple Reviews Completed periods on your dashboard, you must add multiple widgets.

How these widgets motivate you depends on your goals. Maybe you want to outpace your previous day, week, month, or year. Maybe you want to make sure you’re consistent week to week. Or maybe you see you’re blazing past your previous record and decide to slow down.

Whatever your goals, use these widgets to judge your progress and make decisions!

The Reviews Completed widget displays how many reviews you have done in a given period as well as the previous period.

Item Spread

The Item Spread widget shows you how many items from each SRS category are currently in your Reviews queue.
You can choose between Table or Graph views. The graph shows individual SRS stages while the table shows data aggregated by the named SRS categories (apprentice, guru, master, enlightened, and burned).

Table View

The Table view shows the total count of items in each SRS category and further breaks this count down by item type (radical, kanji, and vocabulary).

When the widget does not have enough room to display the radical, kanji, and vocabulary counts, you can still access these by clicking on the appropriate row.

Graph View

In Graph view, hovering over any bar reveals the total number of items in that SRS level. For a further breakdown by item type, click on Details in the top-right corner. Note that Graph View does not display Burned items, as its purpose is to help you quickly decide whether to take on more lessons.

To maintain a steady pace of reviews, it’s best to keep your apprentice item count consistent. If your apprentice count rises higher than usual, consider pausing Lessons until you return to a number you’re comfortable with. By keeping an eye on your Item Spread, you can balance your workload, avoid Reviews overload, and make more informed decisions about when to study new material.

The Item Spread widget shows you how many items from each SRS category are currently in your Reviews queue.

From here you’ll have a few different options.

Layout

The “Layout” button on the upper-left corner of the widget group window lets you change the appearance and how widgets are arranged in the selected group, as well as add new groups.

Add Above / Add Below

Widget Group Layout

This determines how many widgets you can add to a group as well as how they’ll be laid out. You can have up to three widgets in a single group, two widgets of varying or equal sizes, or one widget that spans the width of the whole group. The world is your oyster when it comes to how you want each group on your dashboard to look!

Just keep in mind that if, for example, you have widgets already added to a group, and you want to go down in size from a three-widget layout to a two-widget layout, you will need to remove at least one widget before the layout can be changed.

Add Widget

If you click on “Widget List” at the top of the window, you can quickly find a specific widget. If you want to know what each widget does, you can read about every widget here.

The “Remove 🗑️” icon in the upper-right corner of each group will remove that group and all of the widgets within them.

The “Remove 🗑️” icon on the upper-right corner of the widgets will only delete that specific widget.

Arranging Widgets and Groups

Clicking and dragging the six horizontal dots in the upper-left corner of the widget window will let you rearrange the position of the widgets to your liking. You can also move it outside of the current widget group to switch with another widget.

Similarly, clicking and dragging the six vertical dots in the upper-left of the widget group window will let you move an entire group of widgets up or down your dashboard.

For critical condition items, they’ll be ordered from most critical to least critical, i.e. items with the lowest correct percentage to the highest correct percentage below the 75% threshold.

To see more than the top ten items in each category as well as more information like the burned and unlocked date for those items or the exact review percentage for critical condition items, you can click the “Show All” button to see something like the following:

Got a few questions wrong? Happens to the best of us! When you add this widget to your dashboard, all your recent mistakes are gathered in one place. That makes it easy for you to check out the missed subjects, practice their answers, or even redo entire lessons.

The goal of reviewing Recent Mistakes is to catch your mistakes within twenty-four hours, which makes you much more likely to remember them in future Reviews. After twenty-four hours, the items will disappear, so you’ll want to make sure to check them within that time window. It’s geared toward quick reinforcement, rather than last minute cramming.

Under your customization settings, you can display the widget in one of two modes: “Item List” or “Flashcard” style. In Item List mode, all your recent mistakes are lined up at the bottom, with your biggest troublemakers at the front so you know exactly where to focus.

This widget comes with two handy features: Extra Study for targeted practice and Redo Lessons for a full refresh.

In Flashcard mode, one mistake appears at a time, showing just the character. Here we have the 大 kanji:

The lower section is blurred out for you to try to think of the answer on your own. Once you’ve thought it over, you can click the card to reveal the answer to see if you were correct. Click the card again to review the next mistake.

You can use keyboard shortcuts after clicking the flashcard widget to navigate through items. Our
wasd
navigation works like this:
a
goes to the previous card,
d
goes to the next card, and
s
shows the meaning and reading on the current card.

When you’ve gone through all of your available flashcards, you have the option to restart them or quiz them again with ‘Extra Study’:

You can also access Recent Mistakes through the Extra Study widget, which will give you two more variants.

The best way to use this widget is to check on it after each Reviews session. After looking at items you missed, try recalling the answers on your own, then use Extra Study or Redo Lessons if you need a little boost. The goal of the widget is to get you inside what we call The Learning Zone.

You’re in The Learning Zone when you’re getting 85-95% of your reviews correct. This means you’re challenging yourself just enough for optimal learning.

We consider above 95% outside The Learning Zone for most people because it means you could take on more lessons to stretch your memory.

Sometimes, especially when you’re first starting out on WaniKani, you’ll find doing all your available lessons still puts you above 95% and outside The Learning Zone. That’s okay too! It doesn’t mean you’re not learning Japanese, but as you continue to learn more Japanese and more complex concepts, we want you to remember that it’s okay to get things wrong sometimes. Sometimes failure is the best way to learn.

Likewise, if you’re below 85%, we also consider you outside The Learning Zone.

Learning a new language is very difficult, so use this as a sign to slow down. Maybe scale back on your lessons so your brain doesn’t have so much to memorize all at once, or maybe take more time during Reviews. Practice recognizing each kanji for what it is, use our mnemonics to help you remember the reading and meaning, and don’t forget to try the Extra Study widget!

It’s also important to remember this percentage will change over time. Sometimes you’ll have a great day but a bad month or vice versa. Just because you’re outside The Learning Zone doesn’t mean you’re not learning Japanese. Rather, this widget is meant to help you reflect on your study methods and how effective they are for you.

Like some of our other customizable widgets, it can only display one time period at a time, but you can add multiple widgets simultaneously to see different periods at once. This can be helpful if you want to see your weekly performance over your monthly performance, for example. Whichever period you pick for the widget will reflect in the “Previous Period” percentage as well.
